Ansuta Lakra & Sumarai Tete: Captain & Assistant Coach Of Indian Women’s Hockey Team

On 30th of November, Ansuta Lakra, a young Jharkhandi mid-fielders was given responsibility to lead the Indian Women’s Hockey Team whereas another Jharkhandi Sumarai Tete was appointed as Assistant Coach for the two four-nation tournaments to be played in Argentina, from 7th to 18th December.

Ansuta Lakra comes from non-descriptive village Jonegada in Simdega District. Bereft of any infrastructural facilities, her village shares its fate with many other long-forgotten villages of Jharkhand. Nonetheless it is creditable that Ansuta, with her hard-work and determination, she has risen to highest level in her chosen game.

Her father Marcos Lakra was a good hockey player in his young days. In fact, her father Marcos was first to initiate her into Hockey along with her three brothers Bimal Lakra, Lalit Lakra, Birendra Lakra. Her brothers too have represented India in Men’s Hockey Team. In 1999, during the School Hockey Trial at Simdega, Ansuta was spotted and picked up by Coach Narendra Singh Saini to join the Bariatu Hockey Centre. Since then she has not looked back, she was selected to play for India in 2004 and now in 2011, she is picked to lead Indian Team.

The Indian Women’s Team for the tournament is as under:

Team:

Ansuta Lakra (Captain), Kirandeep Kaur (Vice-Captain), Yogita Bali, Savita, Jaspreet Kaur, Preeti Sunila Kindo, Pinki Devi, P. Sushila Chanu, Ritu Rani, M.N. Ponamma, Deep Grace Ekka, Roslin Dungdung, Rani, Vandana Kataria, M. Lili Chanu, Lilima Minz

Coaches: C.R. Kumar (Chief Coach), T. Chanu and Sumarai Tete (Assistant Coaches),

The interesting fact is that, the newly appointed Assistant Coach Sumarai Tete, another mid-fielder also had an opportunity to Captain the Indian Women’s Hockey Team in Commonwealth Games-2006 in Melbourne and her team won Silver Medal. She was awarded Jharkhand-Ratna in 2006.

The details of the upcoming women’s hockey tournament are as follows:

The four-nation tournament is a part of preparation for the London Olympics. As we know that our Indian Women’s Hockey Team is yet to qualify for the London Olympics, thus the big question remains to be answered.
