Sports-persons from Jharkhand are making their presence felt in the sporting arena, in different sports’ discipline; we list our top 5 of them.
1. Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Captain Indian Cricket Team
One of the highlight of year 2011 was the coronation of Indian One-Day cricket (ODI) Cricket Team led by its captain cool, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who hails from Ranchi, Jharkhand. In the last few years, we have seen the meteoric rise of Mahendra Singh Dhoni, or more popularly known as MSD or Mahi. From hitting sixes in the dusty cricket field of his Almamater J.V.M. School at Mecon to hitting winning six at the packed stadium in Mumbai which hosted the final of ODI Cricket World Cup. The transformation was complete. Not withstanding the disastrous tours of England and Australia, MSD remains an inspiration for many youngsters, not only in Jharkhand but all over the world.
2. Premlata Agrawal, Mountaineer
People like Premlata Agrawal like to quietly follow their passion, removed far-far away the limelight and climbing diligently to the top of the highest mountain peak of the world, Mount Everest. What is more creditable and inspiring is the fact she is a 45-years old housewife with two young kids; thus becoming the oldest Indian women to reach the summit. Hailing from Jamshedpur, she was supported in her endeavour by Tata Steel and had the opportunity to be trained by legendary Bachendari Pal. For fit people like her, the age is only a number.
3. Deepika Kumari, Young Ace Archer
Coming from humble family back-ground, just like fellow Jharkhandian like MSD and Ansuta, the young ace archer Deepika Kumari caught everyone’s imagination, winning Archery Medals during the Common Wealth Games held in New Delhi and Asian Games in Guangzhou, China. In 2011 too, Deepika continued her good run by winning Silver and Gold medals in the Archery World Cup in Ogden, USA and in the World Youth Archery Competition in Legnika, Poland, respectively. Hopefully, she would continue her good run during the upcoming London Olympics and make a podium finish, making all Jharkhandi proud.
4. Ansuta Lakra, Captain Indian Women’s Hockey Team
It has been a long, arduous and bumpy journey for the Ansuta Lakra, from her village Jonegada located in Simdega District, where all-weather road is yet to be constructed. She was lucky that her hockey talent was spotted during a school tournament, and then she was picked up to join Bariatu Hockey Centre in Ranchi. In 2004, she was picked to play for India and now in 2011 she was given the responsibility of Captain. We believe, her big movement is yet to come, with Indian Women’s Hockey Team is yet to qualify for the Olympics. Here is wishing Ansuta and her team, good wishes.
5. Varun Aaron, Young Tear-away Pacer of Indian Cricket Team
Another Jharkhandi sports-person from Jamshedpur, Varun Aaron had first hit the headlines when his bowling speed recorded 153 kmph during the final of Vijay Hazare Trophy against Gujarat. His steady performances in last few years have ensured his selection in our Indian Cricket Team. In the limited opportunities that he has got, Varun has impressed everyone from cricket fraternity to the fans with his bowling speed. It was big let-down for Varun and his fans, when he could not tour fast-paced and bouncy pitches of Australia because of his injuries. In 2012 and beyond, we hope that Varun maintains his fitness and resume bowling fast for our cricket team; sooner the better it will be for him.
We are proud of all of them and wish them good luck.
